COMMISSIONS
First, a conversation.
Every painting is created individually, shaped by the person rather than simply by the photograph. My approach to oil portrait commissions begins with getting to know the sitter.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU
The person behind the painting.
This is an opportunity to get to know the person being painted.
We talk about how you would like them to be portrayed, and where the finished painting will live.
This helps establish the character and direction of the painting.

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SESSION
Creating the starting point.
Rather than asking you to sit for many hours, I create my own photographic reference for each painting.
The photographic session usually takes place in your home, where I work with natural light where possible, or carefully considered lighting when needed, looking for a setting, expression and quality of light that feel natural.

CHOOSING THE IMAGE
Finding the image that will become the painting.
Following the session, I select a small number of photographs that I believe have the potential to become a painting.
Together, we choose the image that will form the starting point for the finished work.

THE PAINTING
From photograph to paint.
Back in the studio, the photograph becomes the starting point.
As the painting develops, I make decisions about colour, detail and emphasis, looking beyond the photographic reference to create a painting with its own presence and character.
I will keep you updated at key stages, sharing images of the work as it progresses.

TIMING
Allowing time for the painting.
Most commissions take approximately 8–10 weeks from the photographic session to approval of the finished painting.
As each commission is individual, timescales, including drying and finishing, may vary and will be discussed with you in advance.

THE FINISHED PAINTING
Completing the work.
When the painting is nearing completion, I will show you the work and we can discuss any final observations.
Following approval, the painting is allowed sufficient time to dry before receiving a protective satin varnish, giving the surface an even, natural finish.
The work can then be supplied unframed, or I can help you choose framing that complements both the painting and the room in which it will hang.

Time spent getting to know the sitter and an original photographic session help shape the direction of each commission.
From the selected image, the painting is developed slowly in oils.

PRICING
Portrait commissions start from £2,000.
Each painting is created individually, with the price depending on the size and complexity of the commission.
The final price will always be agreed before the commission begins. A deposit is taken to confirm the commission, with the remaining balance due on completion.
Framing, travel and delivery can be arranged separately where required.
